Knowing what to do after a massage can be a little tricky. Some people feel like sleeping, while others want to work out or get straight back into their day. However, as an experienced therapist, I can honestly say that one of the best things you can do after a massage is to rest, but not before having a fresh shower.
A warm shower after your massage can help soothe your muscles even more. You may also like to enjoy a herbal tea to support your lymphatic system, as massage can help move built-up waste products through the body. Drinking plenty of water is also a great idea, as it helps keep your body hydrated and supports the natural flushing process.
I usually suggest to my clients not to rush after a treatment. Give yourself time to enjoy the feeling of relaxation, allow those happy hormones to kick in, and let your cortisol levels come down. Let your body enjoy that sense of wellbeing. You may like to have a little nap, relax quietly, or even go to bed early. After a massage, you may feel more connected with your body and more aware of what it needs. It is a great time to slow down, release stress, and ease the aches and pains that can build up from work, daily life, or staying in the same position for long periods.
Working out straight after a massage is generally not ideal, unless you are having a sports massage designed to warm up the muscles before exercise. Although it is not usually recommended, the choice is ultimately yours. Some clients have very busy lifestyles and book a massage just before going to the gym. Others have a neck and shoulder treatment and then return to work. Corporate massages at work are also completely fine, as they are usually shorter and designed to relieve tension during the day.
To truly experience the full benefits of a massage and feel deeply relaxed, we recommend booking your treatment in the afternoon, ideally for 90 minutes. Follow it with a warm shower, a herbal tea, and a restful night’s sleep.
